J H Lord Travel Grants

Introduction
The JH Lord Travel Grants are provided in memory of Mr Joseph (Joe) Henry Lord (1919-1999). During his time in senior positions in both Government and industry, Joe Lord made a major contribution to ensuring that Western Australia remains a focus for exploration and mining by promoting the need for the geological community to be well informed and up-to-date. He was Director of the Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) for twenty years, from 1961. Upon his retirement from the GSWA, he set up and initially directed the Western Australian Minerals and Petroleum Research Institute, later the Minerals and Energy Research Institute of Western Australia (MERIWA).
Joe was founding Chairman of Geoconferences (WA) Inc., incorporated in 1987. This non-profit organisation comprises committed volunteers dedicated to the promotion of geoscience, in particular Precambrian geology, by arranging conferences, symposia, excursions and other meetings. Excess funds are used to develop the careers of young geoscientists, mainly through the provision of travel grants.
Eligibility
Applications for JH Lord Travel Grants are invited from:
- full-time postgraduate students or
- post-doctoral fellows from developing countries* who have been awarded their PhD within the last five years
who are actively engaged in research relevant to Western Australian geology (in particular Precambrian and economic geology) and wish to present the results of their work at a relevant geoscience conference.
Applications from persons studying at Western Australia institutions may relate to conferences within or outside Western Australia (including overseas), but applications from outside Western Australia must relate to conferences held in Western Australia.
